The Finnish quartet who founded Artek in 1935 intended a revolution of sorts. Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl) created a bold mission for Artek to be a “sales and propaganda centre for the new housing ideology.” Embodying the idea of fusing art and technology, the name expresses how the group sought to affect the environment of everyday life - whether it was through architectural projects or design objects for the home. While the world is still working on the perfect city, Artek did perfect some chairs, tables, and stools that became icons of Scandinavian modern design, including the Pirkka series from 1955. These sleek and elegant wooden pieces are still made in Finland from the finest natural pine and birch woods, and evoke the master craftsmanship of co-founder Alvar Aalto.
